William Smith, a seasoned leader and community advocate, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to East Harlem. Born in Harlem and a lifelong resident of East Harlem, William has won two consecutive elections as Democratic District Leader for the 68th District since 2021. He has also been elected as Delegate to the 2022 and 2023 New York County Judicial Conventions. William's professional background includes roles such as Investment Associate at Mercer Investment Consulting and Compliance Manager at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Small Business Program. He is actively involved in community service as Chairman of the Community Advisory Board for New York City Health + Hospital’s Metropolitan Hospital Center and as an advisory board member of IssueVoter. William holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and management administration from The City College of New York, along with certificates in accounting and bookkeeping, Charter Financial Analyst (CFA) Investment Foundations, and AllianceBernstein Climate Investment Academy.
Increase funding for mental health services in East Harlem through state and city budget allocations. Expand access to mental health resources, including counseling and crisis intervention services, particularly in schools and community centers. Provide training for law enforcement officers and community members on how to identify and respond to mental health crises in a compassionate and effective manner.
Allocate additional resources to youth programs, including after-school activities, mentorship programs, and job training initiatives. Collaborate with local schools and community organizations to create safe spaces for young people to learn and grow. Implement outreach campaigns to engage at-risk youth and provide them with positive alternatives to violence and crime.
Enhance community policing efforts to build trust and collaboration between law enforcement and residents. Increase funding for programs that target the root causes of crime, such as poverty, lack of education, and substance abuse. Implement neighborhood watch programs and enhance surveillance in high-crime areas to deter criminal activity.
Strengthen gun control laws at the federal, state, and local levels to prevent the illegal possession and trafficking of firearms. Increase funding for gun buyback programs to get guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals. Advocate for enhanced collaboration between law enforcement agencies at all levels to track and prosecute individuals involved in gun-related crimes.
